President Nayib Bukele announced on September 15, 2022, his intentions to register as a presidential candidate for the 2024 presidential elections.

On the other hand, Vice President Ulloa had never expressed or given any suggestion that he was thinking about a new term as vice president. Although, the vice president had never stated that he wasn’t!

At this moment, it is unclear who will assume the country’s presidential duties as both Bukele and Ulloa will be candidates.

The issue of President Bukele seeking to be president for a second term is a hot topic of discussion; many agree that the president is allowed to be a presidential candidate as long as he leaves office six months before the start of the new presidential term.

On the other hand, members of the oppositioins and reporters critical of the president argue that he is not allowed to run for president under the current Salvadoran constitution.

President Nayib Bukele and Vice President Felix Ulloa registered as pre-candidates for that party to thus compete for re-election to their positions, something that the Constitution prohibits in half a dozen articles.” Voz Publica.

Presidential re-election is not allowed in El Salvador; it is prohibited by the Constitution of the Republic on various occasions. Nuevas Ideas has not been able to build a horizontal leadership that allows it to present another candidacy for the Presidency other than Bukele’s.” Saúl Hernández Alfaro (@FOCOSTV.)

President Nayib Bukele and Vice President, Félix Ulloa, make their re-election official despite the fact that it is prohibited in the Constitution. He says it clearly in at least six articles.” Wendy Monterrosa.

These candidacies are illegal. Presidential re-election is prohibited in the Salvadoran Constitution. THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL. The Salvadoran dictatorship is a reality.” Andy Failer, Nuestro Tiempo.

Nayib Bukele has maintained high approval during his entire presidency. Surveys show that Bukele will win a second term easily.
