SAN MIGUEL, El Salvador — The streets of San Miguel erupted in color and sound Saturday, November 1, as the traditional mail parade signaled the start of one of the country’s most anticipated cultural celebrations.

The patron saint festivities of San Miguel, held in honor of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, will last the entire month of November, concluding with the renowned San Miguel Carnival on November 29. Organizers say this year’s edition aims to surpass previous attendance records.

Residents and visitors lined the city street route to watch the parade, which began at 5 p.m. at the Miguel Félix Charlaix Stadium and concluded at Eufrasio Guzmán Park. Floats, oversized allegorical figures, and an abundance of music greeted spectators.

Performers in elaborate costumes, marching bands, and the traditional “old men of August” effigy drew cheers—and a few startled reactions—as they danced through the streets, reviving customs passed down through generations.

San Miguel Center Mayor Alex Torres said the celebration will include children’s carnivals, the election and coronation of the 66th carnival queen, and the reopening of the fairgrounds.

He said the month-long program is designed to attract local families and international tourists.

Torres confirmed the grand carnival will feature Puerto Rican singer Elvis Crespo and the Mexican group Caliber 50, continuing the tradition of high-profile musical acts. He said the city hopes to exceed last year’s attendance.

“Last year we had 1.5 million visitors for the carnival; this year we expect to be closer to 2 million,” Torres said. “The carnival has always been considered one of the best in Central and South America.”

Candidates for carnival queen will be introduced on November 2 at the Miguel Félix Charlaix Stadium. The fairgrounds will officially open on November 8 at the Government Center and Bullring, featuring two international amusement parks: Playland Park and Luna Park.

With nearly a month of programming, San Miguel officials say the festival remains both a cultural anchor and a significant economic driver for the region.
