El Salvador and Peru have agreed to restart negotiations for a free trade agreement to boost bilateral trade and create new business opportunities.
The announcement came from Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Desilú Leon Chempen, following a meeting with her Salvadoran counterpart, Maria Luisa Hayem, and Pablo Caballero, the Salvadoran Ambassador to Peru.
Peru’s Foreign Minister Leon stated that “Peruvian products have great potential in this market, especially those in the manufacturing, metalworking, and chemical inputs sectors, as well as other goods with high added value.”
The reduction of tariffs and the facilitation of trade will allow more Peruvian companies to export with greater competitiveness, diversifying their markets and contributing to the growth of employment and investment in our country. Desilú Leon Chempen.
The agreement aims to reduce tariffs and simplify trade processes, allowing both countries greater business access to their market.
Minister Leon highlighted that Peruvian exports to El Salvador grew by 43.8% in 2024, reaching $65 million. “This trend underscores the mutual interest in fostering a more competitive economic relationship, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises,” stated Leon.
Minister Hayem emphasized that the agreement will help diversify trade flows, improve access for Salvadoran products to Peru, and enhance trade in goods and services.
“We have taken a fundamental step in strengthening the relationship between El Salvador and Peru with the start of negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries,” remarked Pablo Caballero, the Salvadoran Ambassador to Peru.
Peru’s MINCETUR stated that El Salvador represents “a strategic market for Peru in Central America, with a growing economy and an increasing demand for value-added products.”
