February 27 is the deadline for citizens to update their residential address on their national identity document (DUI), a key requirement to vote near their homes in the February 28, 2027, general elections.
Officials said Salvadorans who moved need to update their address with the National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPN) so their voting center matches their current address.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) began promoting residence updates nationwide on October 8, 2025, through a campaign.
Article 25 of El Salvador’s Electoral Code requires citizens listed in the electoral registry to appear before the RNPN after relocating and submit a sworn declaration confirming their address change.
Completion of that process results in the issuance of a new national identity document, commonly called a DUI, which officially records the updated residence for electoral purposes.
The same legal provision mandates that the RNPN immediately notify the TSE of any modification so authorities can reassign the voter’s polling station based on the new address.
Election officials said having the right address on record is key to keeping voting organized and avoiding problems during the 2027 elections.
February 27, 2026, represents the final opportunity for citizens to modify their address before the registry closes ahead of the February 28, 2027, elections.
The TSE has extended its outreach to Salvadorans living abroad, encouraging them to obtain a DUI that reflects an overseas residence to participate in remote voting.
Under current legislation, Salvadorans domiciled abroad cast ballots assigned to the department of San Salvador, regardless of their municipality or department of origin.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has coordinated with consulates to expand service hours, allowing expatriates additional time to update residence information and secure the required documentation.
Government officials said the extended hours aim to increase participation among diaspora voters, whose role in national elections has grown in recent years.
Authorities urged citizens, both inside and outside the country, to complete address updates promptly, warning that failure to do so could affect where, or even whether, they can vote in 2027.
