According to the VII Population Census and VI Housing Census published by El Salvador’s Central Reserve Bank (BCR), 49,788 foreign-born individuals currently live in El Salvador.
Those born abroad and residing in El Salvador make up 0.83% of the country’s total population of 6,029,976.
The number of foreign-born residents in El Salvador has risen by 31.64% or 11,968 more people since the 2007 census.
In 2007, the Salvadoran Census reported 37,820 foreign-born individuals living in the country, making up 0.66% of El Salvador’s population of 5,744,113.
The 2024 census does not show if these foreign-born individuals have Salvadoran parents or indicate their country of origin.

Internal Migration
Survey results of internal migration indicate that more than 4,686,961 million people (77.73%) continue to live in the same department where they were born, compared to 1,017,899 million (16.88%) who are in another area.
When analyzing migration by department, La Libertad has the smallest percentage of residents who remain in their birthplace, at 65.77%. San Salvador follows, with 72.22% of residents staying in their place of birth.
On the other hand, Morazán has the highest percentage of residents remaining in their birthplace, at 91.01%, followed by Cabañas at 88.77%.
Lastly, the census revealed that 88,746 Salvadorans do not know where they were born.
