Fernando Velasco, executive director of the Salvadoran National Registry of Natural Persons (RNPN), reported that approximately 4.8 million Salvadorans living in the country and about 1.13 million Salvadorans abroad are currently eligible to vote.

Velasco explained that these figures correspond to Salvadoran citizens who hold a valid Documento Único de Identidad (DUI), the national identification card required to participate in elections and other official procedures.

“Currently, there are around 4.8 million registered voters with DUIs inside El Salvador, and about 1.13 million Salvadoran citizens abroad who also hold valid DUIs,” stated Velasco.

The numbers suggest significant changes compared with the Electoral Registry used for the 2024 general elections. In particular, the number of Salvadorans eligible to vote abroad has increased substantially.

According to the comparison, the updated figures show an increase of 388,906 Salvadorans abroad who are now eligible to vote. At the same time, the number of registered voters in El Salvador would decrease by about 673,305.

The Electoral Registry is compiled from data in the National Registry of Natural Persons. This database forms the basis for determining which citizens meet the legal requirements to vote in national elections.

The most recent official registry published by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) was released in November 2023 and corresponds to the Electoral Registry that closed ahead of the 2024 general elections.

That registry recorded 6,214,399 Salvadorans eligible to vote. Of that number, 5,473,305 voters were registered as residents inside El Salvador, while 741,094 voters were listed as living abroad.

The figures currently available on the TSE Transparency Portal reflect statistics updated as of November 10, 2023. These numbers continue to serve as the official reference for the 2024 electoral process.

However, the TSE has not published detailed information about cancellations or removals from the Electoral Registry. The transparency data focuses mainly on registration totals and updates rather than a full breakdown of changes.

Registering to vote is the first step for Salvadorans who want their voices heard in the 2027 elections. Without an updated registration and a valid DUI, citizens cannot participate in choosing the country’s future leaders.

For Salvadorans living abroad and at home, voter registration ensures participation in decisions that affect the economy, security, and daily life. Every registered voter strengthens the democratic process and representation in national elections.
