El Salvador Welcomes 3.9 Million Visitors in December 2024: A Record-Breaking Holiday Season

During the December 2024 Holiday celebrations, El Salvador experienced a remarkable increase in international tourism.

According to Eny Aguiñada, president of the Salvadoran Tourism Institute (ISTU), from December 21 to 31, the country welcomed 172,000 foreign tourists, marking a 46% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Additionally, December emerged as the peak month for international arrivals in 2024, with 431,674 visitors. Over the year, international tourism has grown steadily, reaching a record 3,956,794 visitors, according to ISTU data

In 2024, El Salvador firmly established itself as a top tourist destination in Central America, thanks to improved security and the revitalization of major attractions.

Top Tourist Destinations

According to the Salvadoran Institute of Tourism “ISTU,” the Puerto de La Libertad Tourist Complex topped the list of popular destinations, followed by the National Library of El Salvador (BINAES), Sunset Park, Cerro Verde Natural Park, and Balboa Natural Park.

Domestic Tourism: A Vital Economic Driver

Aguiñada highlighted a significant rise in domestic tourism during the December celebrations, with 1.7 million visitors to national parks and public beaches.

The Historic Center of San Salvador emerged as a key destination, drawing 747,000 visitors. Aguiñada credited the government’s revitalization efforts for transforming the area into a magical destination for families.
